Autism

Assessments

STEP 1

Diagnostic Interview (Parent/Carer Only)

An in clinic or telehealth comprehensive parent only developmental interview for the purpose of gathering developmental history with an emphasis on early signs for autism spectrum disorders.

STEP 1

Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS)

An in clinic based assessment with the child/adolescent. The ADOS is a play based psychometric test developed to assess behaviours consistent with Autism.

STEP 1

Feedback Appointment

A in clinic or telehealth feedback session aimed at providing feedback regarding outcome of assessment, recommendations and referrals to other services if required. During this session the Diagnostic report will be discussed and

report will be available 3-4 weeks following assessment.

PROCESS

  • Parent Developmental interview  (Diagnostic Interview)

  • Child/Adolescent Assessment (ADOS - Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule)

  • Feedback appointment for parents - includes diagnostic report - approx. 3-4 weeks after ADOS appointment

Please note: Additional appointments may be required in complex cases and additional fees will apply in these cases. This will be discussed with you if applicable.

REFERRALS & REBATES

  • A paediatrician's referral is required in order for Medicare rebates to apply.

  • Individuals under 25 years of age who have been referred for ASD assessment by a paediatrician or psychiatrist can claim a rebate from Medicare of $98.95 per session for the Autism assessment sessions.

ADDITIONAL PSYCHOLOGY ASSESSMENT

  • While we endeavour to complete the assessment within the allocated time, in complex cases this is not always possible. It is important to be confident in our diagnostic decision so extra sessions, observations (school and other settings) and fees may be involved. If applicable, this will be discussed soon after your appointment.

LANGUAGE ASSESSMENT

  • If you have also been referred for a language assessment then a copy of this report is required prior to your psychology appointment. Therefore, your psychology assessment should be booked for a date AFTER the speech assessment has been completed and you have the report.

ON THE DAY

  • The ADOS Assessment may or may not be conducted with the parent in the room, depending on which ADOS Module needs to be undertaken. Module 1, Module 2 and the Toddler Module requires a parent/carer in the room (which is for most children under the age of around 4 or 5).

  • Bring two types of a small snack that your child likes as this will be used as part of the assessment.

  • Advise us in advance if you do not have a carer to look after your child during the parent/carer part of the assessment, it is imperative that the parent part of the assessment be carried out without the child present, to avoid exposure of sensitive contact to the child and to avoid disruptions.

  • Bring any other reports that you have regarding the health and development of your child if unable to email prior to appointment.
